Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) Meditation

This type of meditation differs from a regular guided meditation as it focuses on relaxing your body to relax your mind.  Traditional guided meditation focuses on relaxing your mind to relax your body.

Beginners often find it easier to stay present during a PMR meditation.

Throughout the meditation you are asked to tighten and release different muscles starting at the top of your head and ending at the tips of your toes.

Focusing on the muscles provides a purpose and helps to stop the mind from wondering.

Tightening and releasing your muscles, is an excellent way to reduce the amount of stress your body is carrying.

Stress is cumulative and chronic stress, regardless of the cause, transitions your body to the fight or flight mode.

In the fight or flight mode your breathing becomes shallow and rapid, your startle response is heightened, you are no longer able to focus or concentrate and your muscles tighten up – become rigid.

The tighter and more rigid your body becomes, the harder it is for your energy to flow.  It is like you are wearing clothing at least three (3) sizes too small.
As the tension increases your heart centring is pushed upward, like you are squeezing a tube of toothpaste, and re-centres in the mind – the ego.
The mind takes off in all directions – churning and whirling – creating an ever increasing spiral of tension and anxiety.

PMR meditation is an excellent technique to relax and soften your body allowing your energy, your life giving essence, to flow with ease and grace.

When your body softens and relaxes, heart centring naturally occurs and the mind happily follows suite.

Once the body and mind are in unison and relaxed, anxiety melts away and your body begins to repair itself.

Although it sounds counterintuitive, PMR meditation is based on the premise that if you consciously create and release muscle tension, you are not only acknowledging that tension exists, you are creating a memory that you have the power to release muscle tension, and by extension you have the power to support as opposed to thwarting your heart centring and your ability to self-heal.
